It goes beyond that as well. Over my many years of working on the indie scene, I’ve learned that artists “friends” are fickle. The minute that you even say something that they disagree, they are quick to unfriend, unfollow, and withdraw all contact and support from you. It doesn’t matter if the subject matter is speaking directly to them or not. They value surface level words and appearing kind even if they have to lie to the world. The moment you ask them to go deeper on a subject matter, they can’t and their response is to distance themselves from you. I think it is disrespectful to lie to me and let me go out here looking like a fool instead of telling me the truth. If I have food between my teeth, I would want to be told. These people would sit right across from me and just let me keep talking with the broccoli stuck between my teeth. So, I’m ok with having a small group of friends that try their best to be honest with me even if I don’t like what they say rather than lie so they look like a good person.
